California Volunteers places funded fellows with host organizations to work on climate projects, at a fraction of the cost of hiring.

The fit here is specific. The FY26 budget records that the District decided not to proceed with the Community Outreach Coordinator position it had planned for FY25, leaving $5,000 for community outreach and public education and nothing else. Meanwhile the community engagement chapter of the CWPP in card 12 is almost entirely outreach work: neighborhood defensible space workshops, canvassing high-risk neighborhoods ahead of inspections, a wildfire safety fair, a presence at community events, and distribution of preparedness material with the fire inspectors.

A fellow could carry that program for a year. Beyond the outreach itself, it produces the documented community engagement record that CAL FIRE scores under its community support criterion, which strengthens every application that follows.
